With FORT JAMESON (20 Nov), Salisbury (14 Dec) and Cape Town (19 Dec) transit / arrival datestamps all struck on the front. Usual (very) minor corner creasing and small split at left, otherwise a very fine example of this scarce cancellation.
 
Note: the card was sent to the Cape Times newspaper and the message on the reverse reads ‘Xmas Greetings / from a contributor / in central Africa / J.J. Reynard (?) Lake Mweru 27/10 05’.

AA5311 1890 4th July, ‘Tamsen’ envelope addressed to the Transvaal, originating from Gubulawayo, Matabeleland one week before the Pioneer Column crossed from Tuli, Bechuanaland into Matabeleland. Bearing four examples of the ‘Protectorate Fourpence’ surcharge on ½d vermilion (SG 53), one being affixed at each corner and each tied by a ‘678’ Barred Oval, a light proving strike of the ‘GUBULAWAYO' single circle datestamp (with ‘BECHUANALAND’ removed) showing the date ‘4 JY’ inverted. Mafeking (22 July) transit strike on the front and a Pretoria (31 July) transit backstamp. Rare and most attractive. £550

MBSA1713 1899 13th December, homemade wrapper being a folded page from a ledger somewhat crudely sewn at top and right. Endorsed at top 'From G Urlmin B Squadron Plumers Horse (on active service)' and further at lower left countersigned 'Free on active service'. Cancelled 'B.S.A.P. CAMP / BULAWAYO', and addressed to England. Upon arrival endorsed in blue crayon 'T 6' although then apparently deleted, further struck with black '1d / F.B.' cachet'. The wrapper somewhat battered en-route and applied with printed 'V . R . / FOUND OPEN AND OFFICIALLY SEALED' label at left. Reverse with Bulawayo 13 DEC despatch and Watford JA 27 arrival strikes. Africa, / Government House, / Cape Town.’ The contents concern a Sergeant-Major in the British South Africa Police and reads ‘I hereby acknowledge to have received a Medal granted by the British South Africa Company for Service in Rhodesia, 1896.’ and with signature of ‘HWHearn’. The address of the sender is given as ‘Civil Commissioner’s Office, Victoria, Rhodesia’ and dated ‘20th April 1900’. With Cape Town (6 May) arrival backstamp. MBSA1314 1895, page from a Land Transfer document (now folded for display), with a delightful and intricate hand drawn and coloured illustration of the area concerned, applied with 5/-, 10/- and £1 Arms (SG 8, 50, 73), cancelled in ink and further red 'SURVEYOR GENERAL'S OFFICE' cachets. The land in question being an area in Borrowdale, Salisbury, noted at base as being originally issued to Frank Johnson & Coy. Ltd. in March 1895, although superseded by this on the 4th July, 1899.
