Comprising 32 different proofs representing every duty from the ½d to the £9 all printed in black on thick glazed card and cut down to approximately 32x38mm. Showing a range of designs, 15 with wording ‘THE STAMP ACT 1864’ and 17 with ‘GOVERNMENT OF CAPE OF GOOD HOPE’. Also showing some with black wording on white back-grounds and vice-versa, value tablets straight or curved and various frame designs. The design changes presumably representing duties issued at different dates. A few small faults including the £1.5s with surface scratch and a few with light peripheral staining. An extremely rare and most attractive array.

AC676 Revenue 1877 cheque for £27.6s drawn on the ‘Standard Bank of British South Africa, Limited’, endorsed at top ‘Willowmore’ and dated 4th July 1877 in manuscript. With a Willowmore / Cape Colony single circle datestamp without date or time-code, presumably applied when the cheque was cashed. Bearing a colourless oval embossed QV 1d ‘cheque stamp’ with very good embossing. Interesting use of the word ‘British’ in the bank name. Usual folds and filing holes. £35
AC913 Revenue 1882 (25th July), illustrated monetary document headed ‘The Standard Bank of British South Africa’ with printed and manuscript text reading ‘At Thirty days Sight Pay this SECOND of Exchange (First & Third being unpaid) to the order of . . .’ for an amount of £300. Bearing a large format 1/- brown revenue stamp tied by a circular bank cachet dated 25th July, struck in red. Most attractive. £45
AC1112 Revenue c1884 large part printed ‘Butcher’s Licence at £5’ with the ‘5’ inserted in manuscript. Bearing two overlapping examples of the large QV £2.10s revenue stamp embossed in blue. The licence made out in favour of John William George, Landdrost of Butterworth. Faults including small closed tears at top, otherwise a presentable example of a seldom seen licence. £30
AC673 Revenue c1900 unused cheque drawn on the ‘Standard Bank of South Africa, Limited / Kimberley’ dated 15 April 1879. Bearing a colourless oval embossed QV 1d ‘cheque stamp’. Clean and attractive. £30
AC1087 Revenue 1883 (1st May) De La Rue sheet (200 x 324mm) headed ‘Appendix B. / Stamps printed in “Doubly Fugitive” ink.’ Bearing three rows of three QV revenue stamps, the top row all ½d lilac, the middle row 1s green and the lower row with £2 deep reddish violet. Produced by De La Rue to demonstrate the security features of doubly fugitive ink to the Colonial Government. The central column has been treated with oxalic acid, and the right column with benzine - chemicals used to remove pen and ink cancels respectively. On page five of the eight page accompanying ‘Messrs Thos De La Rue & Co’s Report upon the Adhesive Stamps used at the Cape of Good Hope. May 1st 1883’, De La Rue state “It will be noticed that [oxalic acid] destroys beyond restoration the colour of the stamp, whilst [benzine] washes the body of the stamp away,” stating that ink for revenue stamps has “to fulfil a totally different function to that in which the postage stamps are printed” due to the relative ease of removing pen cancels compared to inked postmarks. Every page, including the Appendix watermarked ‘IMPERIAL TREASURY DE LA RUE’ and ‘DLR’ monogram surmounted by a crown. Superb. Ex De La Rue Archives. £3,250

AC1116 Revenue 1906 (20th December), four page printed Deed of Transfer document (212x342mm) for ‘The Royal Hotel (1906) Limited’, situated on Plein Street, Cape Town. The transaction value was £30,000 and the stamp duty was receipted by the affixing of £107 in revenue stamps, comprising one ‘Hope Standing’ £5 grey-green and blue-green, FIVE examples of the £20 grey-green and deep carmine and one KEVII £2 grey-green and yellow-green (Barefoot 142, 143, 156), each stamp tied / cancelled with DEEDS REGISTRY / CAPE TOWN (20 DE 06) crowned oval datestamps. A spectacular and very rare franking. SOLD
