GRIQUALAND WEST
AC830 GRIQUALAND WEST 1877-78 First Printing in red on 4d blue with outer frame-line. BLOCK OF FOUR comprising Types 3 and 2 over 4 and 5. Very fine fresh mint. A most attractive, very rare and remarkable multiple showing four overprint types se-tenant. With clear RPS certificate (1962). SG 6b, 6c, 6d, 6e £3,750
AC844 GRIQUALAND WEST / Postal History 1872 (28th March), envelope addressed to England bearing two examples of the Cape 1/- deep green (watermark Crown CC, with outer frame-lines, SG 26) cancelled with barred triangle cancellations and with Cape Town (4 April) transit datestamp struck on the front. The reverse with a fine dispatch strike of the DU TOITS PAN (1872 / MR 28) Dated Town Oval and a Leeds (16 May) arrival datestamp. The envelope open on three sides and small piece missing on reverse (clear of postmarks). A very scarce high franking item of mail emanating from the diamond fields before Griqualand West became a Crown Colony in January 1873 and the issue of overprinted stamps in 1877. Putzel records the opening of Du Toits Pan in March 1872, which must make this one of the earliest recorded strikes. SOLD
AC906 GRIQUALAND WEST / Postal History 1875 (5th March), piece cut from an envelope addressed to Prague, Bohemia. Bearing a Cape 1d carmine-red and 4d blue (SG 29, 24a) tied by the distinctive Griqualand West circular barred dumb obliterator with a light but readable DU TOITS PAN (MR 5 / 1875) Dated Town Oval (without serifs) alongside. For some reason the stamps were disallowed (blue manuscript markings) or postage was deemed insufficient for onward transmission to Europe and a very fine framed ‘UNPAID’ cachet was struck in black, tying the 1d adhesive. With a Cape Town (2 Apr) transit datestamp at lower right. Some light staining, otherwise an intriguing item, tragically reduced by some philatelic vandal. SOLD
