1896 (July), stampless ‘In Dienst’ cover addressed to Johannesburg endorsed at top ‘In Dienst’ and ‘From the Italian / Consul / Massiglia?’ at lower left. Bearing a clear strike of the PRETORIA Z.A.R. (19 Jul) double circle datestamp. The reverse with large circular cachet of the Italian Consul, Pretoria, struck in violet and with a Johannesburg (20 Jul) arrival backstamp. Presumably diplomatic missions in the ZAR had a domestic free post privilege? Most unusual. |
