1959 QE DEFINITIVES, SG 18-31  -  POSTAL HISTORY

1964 (17th February), cover addressed by airmail to South Africa, bearing a 1959 definitive 6d Victoria Falls (SG 24). Although partially cancelled by a Salisbury (17 Sep) machine cancellation, the stamp was disallowed, being marked as such by pen. A ‘T8c’ taxe marking was struck in violet and South African postage due stamps to the value 8c were affixed and cancelled at Rondebosch (21 Sep). With unclear circular marking, possibly reading ‘T / CENTIMES’ ? with ’28.8’ inserted in manuscript.
 
Note: the stamps of Rhodesia and Nyasaland were withdrawn by Southern Rhodesia on 19th February 1964 and subsequently demonetized on 1st September 1964.
