Postal History 1881 (February), wrapper (?, with original letter stating contents were an ‘eye glass’ and ‘10d in stamps for [return] postage’). Addressed to and sent registered to Cape Town. Bearing a 1d carmine-red (creased), a single ‘3’ on 3d pale dull rose and a 6d violet (SG 25b, 29, 37) tied by light ‘17’ BONCs with a proving strike of GEORGE (10 Feb) single circle datestamp below. Also showing a good strike of the scarce and distinctly shaped Registered Letter Datestamp (Goldblatt type RL 1) reading REGISTERED / CAPE OF GOOD HOPE (12 Feb) with manuscript ‘Registered 54’. Somewhat battered, though most unusual.
