REVENUE / Cigarette Tax 189? Cigarette Box Tax Band (371mm x 30mm) with no quantity or duty specified. Perforated all round and with much original gum showing some rose-pink offset, presumably from a cigarette box. Printed in reddish lilac and pale grey-green with the ZAR Coat-of-Arms within a central circle with wording ‘BAND / VOOR / CIGARETTENDOOS / Z.A. REPUBLIEK’ in surrounding scrolls. Interestingly, ‘L.G.K. LITHO’ printed below the left scroll appears to indicate the name of the printer. Vertical folds as to be expected from affixing to the container, otherwise in remarkably fine condition. Apparently unrecorded in either Barefoot or the Transvaal Study Circle Revenue handbook. A large part example is illustrated in ‘Transvaal Philately’ (1986, page 269) as ‘Cigarette tax band of the Second ZAR’ though without any further explanatory text. A very rare survivor.
