REVENUE / Cigar Tax 189? Cigar Tax Band (432mm x 48mm) for 25 cigars and showing a duty of 3/9. Imperforate on all sides and with most of the original gum. Printed in black and (very) deep carmine-red with the ZAR Coat-of-Arms within a central double circle surrounded by wording ‘BAND VOOR SIGARENKIST / Z.A. REPUBLIEK’ with ‘25 / SIGAREN’ to the left and ‘3/9’ to the right. Vertical folds as to be expected from affixing to the container and a few areas of surface scuffing, otherwise in remarkably fine condition. This issue appears to be utilising the same delicate surfaced paper as employed for the Customs Permit £1 duty believed to have been issued around 1899. Apparently unrecorded in either Barefoot or the Transvaal Study Circle Revenue handbook. A very rare survivor.
