POSTAL HISTORY
AC771
Postal History 1905 (December), incoming picture postcard from the USA (black and white view ‘Sutro’s Heights, San Francisco), bearing a single US 2c adhesive. Addressed to Cape Town, and re-addressed on arrival with ‘Uitenhage’ in manuscript. Showing a large ‘3d’ tax marking (Goldblatt type PD16) and a CAPE TOWN / T (26 Dec) double circle datestamp (Goldblatt type SP33, the ‘T’ signifying ‘that postage was due on the item’). From 1890 there was no charge for redirecting mail, therefore it appears the Cape Town GPO considered the card underpaid (perhaps because the stamp was overlooked, being affixed to the view side). There are no US postal markings indicating the card was insufficiently prepaid.
