1914 (17th February), printed official envelope with ‘On His Majesty’s Service’ at top and ‘Department of Posts and Telegraphs / Union of South Africa.’ at lower left. Sent registered to England, bearing a King’s Head 6d black and violet (SG 11) tied by a REGISTERED CAPE TOWN (17 Feb) oval datestamp. With a Cape Town registration cachet struck in blue. The adhesive has been applied over a crowned oval cachet ‘CONTROLL(ER CIRCULA)TION BRANCH / O(FFICIAL FRE)E / G.P.O.’ struck in blue. As official mail did not qualify for free postage, a 6d adhesive was applied. Birmingham (10 Mar) arrival backstamp. Scarce.
