1877 (March), ZAR / CAPE COMBINATION COVER. Mourning envelope addressed to England. Bearing a ZAR 1875 6d deep blue (SG 63c) used with a light target-type cancellation,. The ZAR adhesive is partly overlapped by a Cape of Good Hope 6d violet (SG 25b) tied by a ‘1’ Barred Oval Numeral Cancellation, also tying the ZAR adhesive. With originating strike of PRETORIA / ZUID AFRIKA (14 Mar) single circle datestamp below. Cape Town (26 Mar) transit at lower left. Cape Packet Plymouth (22 Apr) and London (23 Apr) transit backstamps. This envelope would have been carried on the Currie steamer ‘Corland’ which sailed from Cape Town on the 27th March 1877. The cover with a few edge tears and small part of flap missing, though a rare cover, being one of the few known bearing an unoverprinted ZAR 6d paying the ZAR portion of the 6d + 6d rate, which was only introduced two weeks earlier on the 1st March, 1877. The ZAR was annexed four weeks later on the 12th April, 1877. Clear RPS certificate (1973)
