POSTAL HISTORY
T1751
1878 (April), ZAR / CAPE COMBINATION COVER addressed to England. Bearing a Transvaal 1878 3d mauve on blue (SG 149) used with a target-type cancellation. A Cape of Good Hope 6d was applied, probably at Lydenburg, slightly overlapping the Transvaal adhesive and tied in transit by a Cape Town (26 Apr) single circle datestamp with an additional strike alongside. With an originating LYDENBURG / ZUID AFRIKA (13 Apr) single circle datestamp at lower left. Cape Packet Plymouth (24 May) and Hull (25 May) transit / arrival backstamps. Believed to have been carried on the Union liner ‘African’. Some edge stains though a rare cover.
