POSTAL HISTORY
T1753
1872 (September), ZAR / CAPE / GRIQUALAND WEST COMBINATION COVER addressed to England and endorsed ‘Per R. Mail Steamer’. Bearing, on the reverse, Borrius 1870 printing 6d dull blue BLOCK OF FOUR (SG 23a, one damaged) cancelled with two strikes of the ZAR target-type obliterator and with an originating POTCHEFSTROOM / ZUID AFRIKA (28 ? Aug) single circle datestamp, also struck on the reverse. The cover was routed via Griqualand West prior to it being declared a Crown Colony in January 1873 and received a fair transit strike of the very scarce DIAMOND FIELDS (3 Sep) dated town oval on the reverse (the PO was then located at Klip Drift). The front of the cover bears six examples (strip of three, pair and a single) of the Cape rectangle 4d blue (SG 24a), all tied by the distinctive Griqualand West circular barred dumb obliterator. Cape Town (13 Sep) transit on the front partially ties one of the 4d adhesives and with a Liverpool (18 Oct) arrival backstamp. Flap with tear and some adhesives with faults, though a remarkable and extremely rare combination cover from the period when there was no postal agreement between the ZAR and the Cape and full postage (2s + 2s) of both territories had to be paid. Sismondo certificate (2002)
