CUSTOMS DUTY 1956 (9th March), incoming unsealed advertising envelope from England, addressed to Johannesburg. Bearing a Great Britain QEII 1½d Wilding and a South Africa ½d ‘warthog’, the latter overprinted ‘DOUANE’, both tied by a Liverpool (9 Mar) machine roller cancellation. Both sides of the envelope are printed in colour with ‘PRINTED MATTER RATE’ at top. With original contents - a 12 page printed advertising booklet extolling the virtues and health benefits of Guinness (including insomnia, pregnancy and acne!) Customs Duty stamps were available from some South African Missions abroad whereby firms sending dutiable advertising material to South Africa could pre-pay the duty. Envelopes showing customs stamps tied by a cancellation are very scarce. Delightful.
