CAPE OF GOOD HOPE
Griqualand West, Mafeking, Vryburg
 -  GRIQUALAND WEST

GRIQUALAND WEST / Postal History 1875 (5th March), piece cut from an envelope addressed to Prague, Bohemia. Bearing a Cape 1d carmine-red and 4d blue (SG 29, 24a) tied by the distinctive Griqualand West circular barred dumb obliterator with a light but readable DU TOITS PAN (MR 5 / 1875) Dated Town Oval (without serifs) alongside. For some reason the stamps were disallowed (blue manuscript markings) or postage was deemed insufficient for onward transmission to Europe and a very fine framed ‘UNPAID’ cachet was struck in black, tying the 1d adhesive. With a Cape Town (2 Apr) transit datestamp at lower right. Some light staining, otherwise an intriguing item, tragically reduced by some philatelic vandal.
