OOTSI / SOUTH AFRICA 1899 (26th April), Cape 2d bistre overprinted ‘British / Bechuanaland’ reading upwards (SG 32). Block of 24 comprising four rows across the pane with sheet margin at left and interpanneau margin at right. Plateable as positions 7-30 from the left pane, and includes the variety “No stop after ‘Bechuanaland’” on position 15 (SG 32a). The block shares 12 strikes of the very rare OOTSI / SOUTH AFRICA (26 AP 99) double circle datestamp. A few minor faults though a remarkable multiple.

Note: this datestamp appears almost identical in style to that of Crocodile Pools, which was the only other Bechuanaland datestamp known to have the words ‘South Africa’ at base. That territorial designation suggests it was probably intended for use at a railway telegraph office and this block may well emanate from a telegram. Since this postmark was first recorded in December 1988 (RP13, p.227) only one further example has been reported (RP16, p.277).
