POSTAL HISTORY Orange Free State / Cape of Good Hope combination cover. 1872 (4th July), envelope addressed to Cape Town bearing a single Orange Free State 6d rose (SG 5) affixed at upper left and tied by a superb ‘1’ in 16-bar oval cancellation with a very fine proving strike of the Bloemfontein (JY 4) unframed circular datestamp below. A Cape 4d blue rectangle (SG 24a) has been affixed at upper right and tied by a neat ‘1’ Barred Oval Numeral Canceller with a proving Cape Town (JY 11) single circle datestamp alongside. The envelope has been fractionally reduced at base otherwise a very fine and attractive example of mail between the OFS and Cape Colony and correctly reflecting their respective internal postage rates. Rare.
