BECHUANALAND / Stellaland / Warren Expedition 1885 (23rd March), envelope from Colonel Methuen addressed to his wife in England. Bearing a single Cape 6d reddish purple (SG 52) tied by a BARKLY G.W. (23 MR) single circle datestamp. Backstamped with Cape Town (MR 25), Bristol (AP 14) and Corsham (AP 14) transit / arrival datestamps. Faults, including reinforced tears and crumpling, though a rare example of mail from this expedition.

Note: Colonel Methuen served in the Warren Expedition, where he commanded Methuen's Horse, a corps of mounted rifles. It is believed at this date he was at Maretsani, near Mafeking (previously part of Goshen, one of the Boer republics the Warren Expedition was sent to annex). This cover is recorded by Alan Drysdall in his census of Warren Expedition mail in his article ‘A Postal History of Stellaland’ (London Philatelist 101.65, March 1992).
