BECHUANALAND / Stellaland / Warren Expedition 1885 (28th September), stampless envelope from Colonel Methuen addressed to his wife, then in the Cape. Bearing a Cape Town (SP 28) transit and Muizenberg (SP 29) single circle datestamps on the front. Showing a manuscript ‘4d’ (deleted) and ‘6d’. The envelope was readdressed and was backstamped with a Wynberg (SP 29) arrival datestamp. Slight staining on the face panel, otherwise very fine and a rare example of mail from this expedition.

Note: Colonel Methuen served in the Warren Expedition, where he commanded Methuen's Horse, a corps of mounted rifles. It is believed at this date he was at Orange River. The original address ‘Farmer Peck’s’ was an inn opened in Muizenberg in 1825. This inn was famous for its ham and eggs, and offered “excellent beds without any fleas”.
