BRITISH BECHUANALAND 1886 (8th July) envelope addressed to England bearing 8d in postage stamps, comprising 1885 Cape overprints 1d rose-red (pair, SG 5) and 2d pale bistre (strip of three, SG 6) tied by MAFEKING BECHUANALAND (JY 8) single circle datestamps. Apparently overweight, the cover was taxed and bears various markings including a handstruck ‘T’ and a ‘1/2’ in circle (the ‘2’ added in manuscript). Backstamped with a Southampton (AU 3) datestamp on arrival. Some creasing and edge faults, though exceptionally rare with probably only 12-15 covers bearing this first issue believed to exist, this being one of the very few showing different duties of this issue used together and one of the highest frankings. A major item of Bechuanaland philately. Ex Holmes (Harmers, 1981, lot 1298) and has not been on the market since then.
