| BRITISH BECHUANALAND 1887 (21st March), registered envelope addressed to Graaff Reinet. Bearing a single 1885 Cape overprinted 6d reddish purple (SG 7) tied by a ‘638’ BONC with a lightly impressed proving strike of the MAFEKING (MR ?) single circle datestamp alongside. Bearing NELSPOORT / R.T.O. transit and Graaff Reinet (MR 23) transit / arrivals datestamps struck on the front. Backstamped with a T.P.O. (MR 22) and further strikes of Mafeking and Graaff Reinet. Copy of a BPA certificate (1984) which observes ‘vertical crease through stamp and heavy surface abrasion’. Despite the faults, very rare, with 12-15 covers bearing stamps of the first issue believed extant and only three bearing the 6d duty. |
