| BRITISH BECHUANALAND 1888 (22nd September), envelope addressed to England, bearing examples of the 1888 lilac and black surcharges. ‘2d.’ in red on 2d and ‘6d.’ in black on 6d (SG 23, 26) tied by two strikes of the TAUNGS BECHUANALAND (SP 22) single circle datestamp with an additional strike alongside. Backstamped with Cape Town (SP 26) and Leicester (OC 16) transit / arrival datestamps. A few edge faults, otherwise a very fine and rare example of these provisionals used together on cover. Ex Holmes (Harmers, 1981, lot 1301) and has not been on the market since then. |
