BECHUANALAND PROTECTORATE 1889 (9th August), envelope addressed to Switzerland bearing a total of 1s/7d in postage, representing double the 9½d rate to Europe. Comprising examples of the 1888 ‘Protectorate’ surcharges ½d (strip of four), 1d, 2d and 6d and a pair of the 1889 ‘Protectorate / Fourpence’ on ½d vermilion (SG 40, 41, 42, 45, 53). All stamps are cancelled or tied by ‘674’ BONCs with a fine proving strike of the MOLEPOLOLE BECHUANALAND (AU 9) single circle datestamp, partially overlapping a Mafeking (AU 23) transit datestamp. Some minor edge faults and flap missing, affecting part of the Zurich (10 Sep) arrival backstamp. A spectacular and exceedingly rare early franking from the Protectorate and showing a wonderful array of adhesives.
