BRITISH BECHUANALAND 1891 (9th June), envelope addressed to England bearing a single 1888 unappropriated die 6d lilac and black (SG 14, with a few blunt perforations) tied by a β€˜638’ BONC with a proving strike of the MAFEKING BECHUANALAND (AP 13) single circle datestamp on the reverse. Backstamped with a London Paddington (JY 6) arrival datestamp. Part of flap missing which affects part of the Cape Town transit datestamp. Ex Holmes (Harmers, 1981, lot 1312).
 
Note: although the letter rate from Britain to British Bechuanaland was reduced from 6d to 4d per half ounce on 1st January 1891, it appears the reciprocal rate had not been introduced by mid April of that year.
