BECHUANALAND PROTECTORATE (British Bechuanaland used in the Protectorate) 1891 (8th September), envelope addressed to England bearing 1888 unappropriated dies 2d and 4d lilac and black (SG 11, 13) tied by two fine strikes of the MACLOUTSI (SP 8) single circle datestamp. Backstamped Macloutsi (SP 8), Vryburg (SP 14), Cape Town (SP 16) and Paddington (OC 5) transit / arrivals datestamps. The envelope with neatly repaired tears at left and some very light surface discolouration. Scarce use of the 4d and a fine example of the 6d per half ounce letter rate to England. Ex Holmes (Harmers, 1981, lot 1356).
 
Note: it is believed Macloutsi was opened in June 1891 to deal with mail from the Pioneer Column who had entered Mashonaland in July 1890.
