BECHUANALAND PROTECTORATE (British Bechuanaland used in the Protectorate) 1892 (21st June), ‘Sitwell’ envelope with two original letters (dated 14th and 16th June), addressed to England. Bearing a single 1888 unappropriated dies 6d lilac and black (SG 14) tied by two strikes of the MACLOUTSI (JU 21) single circle datestamp. Backstamped with Vryburg (JU 27), Cape Town (JU 29) and Beal (JY 18) transit / arrivals datestamps. Flap a little roughly opened otherwise a very fine example of the 6d per half ounce letter rate to England.

Note: it is believed Macloutsi was opened in June 1891 to deal with mail from the Pioneer Column who had entered Mashonaland in July 1890. The sender, Captain William Henry Sitwell, served with the Bechuanaland Border Police and was stationed at Macloutsie 1891-93.
