BRITISH BECHUANALAND 1893 (23rd April), envelope addressed to the Channel Islands bearing an 1888 unappropriated die 4d lilac and black (SG 13) and a ‘Jubilee’ 1d lilac (SG 13, 33) tied by ‘638’ BONCs with a proving MAFEKING BECHUANALAND (AP 23) single circle datestamp alongside. Backstamped with Vryburg (AP 24) and Jersey (MY 16) transit / arrival datestamps. Some faults including a small piece missing at top.

Note: although the letter rate from the United Kingdom to British Bechuanaland was reduced to 2½d per half ounce from the 1st July 1892, the PMG of British Bechuanaland noted the reciprocal rate had not been introduced by the 31st March 1893. This envelope franked at 5d (double the 2½d rate) suggests it may have started soon afterwards.
