BECHUANALAND PROTECTORATE 1898 (15th October), QV 4d registered postal stationery envelope (B&BS RE15 / H&G 7) addressed to Johannesburg. Bearing QV Protectorate ‘Jubilees’ 2d grey-green and carmine and 6d purple on rose-red (SG 62, 65) cancelled with a superb ‘1014’ BONC and with an equally superb proving strike of the PITSANI S.AFRICA (OC 15) single circle datestamp alongside. With a manuscript ‘NO 83’ registration number at upper left and backstamped with a Mafeking (OC 16) squared circle datestamp. The flap is missing, revealing the printer’s imprint McCorquodale & Co). A most attractive and rare proving cover for Pitsani and the ‘1014’ BONC and a very fine example of a double weight 4d per half ounce letter rate to the Transvaal.
