CAPE OF GOOD HOPE / BECHUANALAND / ‘Camel Post’ 1911 (31st July), Cape of Good Hope KEVII 1d postal stationery envelope addressed to Upington. The imprinted stamp is cancelled with a very fine strike of the MIER B.B (JY 31) single circle datestamp. Backstamped with an Upington (AU 7) arrival datestamp. A very scarce example of mail from one of the periods (1st February 1909 to 1st April 1914) when camels were used to transport mail between Mier (or technically the village of Rietfontein where the agency was situated) and Zwartmodder, which was situated about two thirds the way to Upington. Although this datestamp carries the territorial designation ‘B.B.’ for British Bechuanaland, the agency at Mier / Rietfontein did not open until after annexation to the Cape.
