1890 4th July, ‘Tamsen’ envelope addressed to the Transvaal, originating from Gubulawayo, Matabeleland one week before the Pioneer Column crossed from Tuli, Bechuanaland into Matabeleland. Bearing four examples of the ‘Protectorate Fourpence’ surcharge on ½d vermilion (SG 53), one being affixed at each corner and each tied by a ‘678’ Barred Oval, a light proving strike of the ‘GUBULAWAYO' single circle datestamp (with ‘BECHUANALAND’ removed) showing the date ‘4 JY’ inverted. Mafeking (22 July) transit strike on the front and a Pretoria (31 July) transit backstamp. Rare and most attractive.
