| CAPE OF GOOD HOPE / ‘Camel Post’ 1903 (2nd May), envelope bearing a single Cape of Good Hope KEVII 1d carmine (SG 71) tied by a very fine strike of the ‘938’ BONC with equally fine proving datestamp of MIER (MY 2 with ‘2’ inverted) struck below. Upington (10 May) arrival backstamp. Cover roughly opened and repaired at left, otherwise a fine and very scarce example of mail from the period when camels were used to transport mail between Mier (or technically the village of Rietfontein where the agency was situated) and Zwartmodder. Although this datestamp carries the territorial designation ‘B.B.’ for British Bechuanaland, the agency at Mier / Rietfontein did not open until after annexation to the Cape. A rare proving card for Mier and BONC ‘938’ with very few recorded. |
