‘VIC’ VISSER BECHUANALAND
Postal History
Postal History
VV531
BECHUANALAND PROTECTORATE (British Bechuanaland used in the Protectorate) 1897 (2nd March), envelope sent registered to Germany, bearing QV ‘Jubilee’ 6d (SG 36) horizontal pair and a single tied by two light but readable ‘896’ BONCs (not ‘968’ as recorded by Holmes) with a proving strike of the MACLOUTSIE (2 MR) single circle datestamp below. Endorsed ‘Per R.M.S. “Moor.” / Registered 89’ at upper left and with German incoming registration label. With Mafeking (MR 7) squared circle transit and Schwelm (28 Mar) arrival backstamps. A very rare proving cover for Macloutsie.

Note: The flap bears a very fine red wax impression of an ‘H’ in barred diamond. This appears to match the appearance and dimensions of the obliterators issued to the early British South Africa Company postal agencies, and in this case that issued to Tuli (approximately 80 miles from Macloutsie). As the latest recorded date of use of the ‘H’ obliterator is May 1895 (Barry) this may represent late, unorthodox use of the device at a different location.
