NA483
1906 (14th December), stampless envelope, locally addressed and sent unsealed. Bearing a POSTAGE PAID DURBAN / NATAL (14 DE) double circle datestamp. Some light staining, otherwise fine.

Note: in ‘The Postal Markings of Natal’, Hart, Kantey & Leon (p43) record this as Type T.3.2 and state the “handstamp was used as a canceller for bulk postage paid in advance during a short-lived experiment in 1906/1907. The example illustrated [also dated 14 Dec 1906] was struck in black and sent from the election office of the Hon. T. Maydon.” In ‘Postmarks’ (Vol. 2, p361), Putzel states “Postage Paid datestamp used on cover for advanced postage payments. It was used from late 1906 to early 1907. It is rare”.
