SOUTH AFRICA / Postage Dues 1981 (20th October), locally addressed envelope (trimmed at top) bearing a 5c ‘Protea’ (SG 418a) tied by a Johannesburg (20 Oct) datestamp. The envelope received a bilingual cachet ‘NIE STANDAARD GROOTTE NIE / NOT STANDARD SIZE / BOETE / SURCHARGE’ struck in red and a circular ‘T/10c’ taxe marking. The shortfall was receipted by a block of ten (5x2) 1c deep yellowish green postage dues (SG D75) which were affixed and cancelled with ROOSEVELT PARK DEPOT (29 Oct) datestamps with a further strike (30 Nov) on the reverse. This postage due issue is very scarce on cover. SG note “The printing of Postage Due Stamps ceased in 1978. Isolated examples are known used as late as 1980.”
