1890 (22nd August), envelope addressed to Germany. Bearing two pairs of the ‘Vurtheim’ 2d olive-bistre (SG 178) tied by PRETORIA (22 Aug) single circle datestamps. Cape Town (27 Aug) and Kempten (18 Sep) transit / arrival backstamps. Unobtrusive tear at top, clear of the adhesives and some light staining on the reverse, otherwise fine. The letter rate to Europe via the Cape at this time was 7½d per half ounce. The 8d postage affixed therefore represents an overpayment of ½d or a shortage of ½d stamps.
