Bearing 10/- in postage comprising five examples of the ‘Vurtheim’ 1/- yellow-green and a 5/- slate (SG 183b, 185) all tied by ‘4’ in barred triangle obliterators. Also showing part of a proving Barberton registration cachet. Registered London (16 Dec) arrival datestamp struck in red. A very rare and spectacular franking with very few examples of the 5/- duty recorded used on cover.
Note: assuming this envelope was sent via the Cape Colony (rather than Natal) at the letter rate of 6d per half ounce, the postage paid represents a weight of 9½ ounces @ 6d per half ounce plus 6d registration. The high franking may also indicate the envelope contained valuables and an additional fee was paid to increase compensation in the event of loss.
