POSTAL HISTORY
T2172
1887 (15th July), envelope addressed and sent registered to England. Bearing 11/6 in postage comprising ‘Vurtheim’ 6d pale dull blue, 1/- yellow-green and a PAIR OF THE 5/- SLATE (SG 182a, 183b, 185), all cancelled with ‘12’ in concentric circles with a proving MIDDELBURG TRANSVAAL (15 Jul) large single circle datestamp struck on the reverse. With ‘Registered No.419’ endorsed at upper left, an oval ‘R’ registration mark struck in black and ‘4/6’ in red and blue manuscript. RLO Cape Town (20 Jul) transit backstamp and with a Registered London (12 Aug) arrival datestamp struck in red on the front. The envelope with flap missing and edge faults affecting the 6d and one 5/-. An extremely rare and spectacular franking with very few examples of the 5/- duty recorded used on cover.

Note: the letter rate to England in 1887 was 8d per half ounce. The postage paid suggests a weight of 8 ounces @ 8d per half ounce (10/8) with an overpayment of 4d plus 6d for registration. Alternatively, the high franking may indicate the envelope contained valuables and an additional fee was paid to increase compensation in the event of loss.
