POSTAL HISTORY
T2192
1899 (1st May), envelope with addressed and sent registered within the ZAR. Bearing eight examples of the ½d green (some faults) all tied by CHRISTIANA Z.A.R. (1 May) double circle datestamps struck in blue. With a Bloemhof (4 Jun) arrival backstamp. It appears the letter was never delivered as there is second strike of Christiana (1 Jun), also struck in blue at the lower right and a fine strike of the ONAFGEHAALDE BRIEVEN DEPT. Z.A.R. (3 Jan 00) double circle datestamp on the reverse. Vertical crease and large part of reverse missing though a characterful cover.

Note: the interesting address: ‘Rooidraai. O.V. Staat / By den Heer du Toit / P.K. Bloemhof’ suggests the addressee was residing close to the southern bank of the Vaal river which divides the ZAR from the OVS with Bloemhof on the northern bank being the closest postal agency.
