POSTAL HISTORY
T2193
1899 (16th October), Anglo Boer-War period envelope addressed to England bearing five ½d green (SG 216), all tied by JOHANNESBURG Z.A.R. (16 Oct) segmented double circle datestamps. With London (17 Jan) arrival backstamp. The Anglo-Boer War started five days earlier on 11th October 1899 and the envelope was opened and resealed with a printed black on white censor seal ‘Postdepartement, Z.A. Republiek. / GEOPEND VOOR INSPECTIE, ONDER DE OORLOGSWET. / Postkantoor Johannesburg.’ Roughly opened at base otherwise a fine example of the 2½d per half ounce rate introduced on the 1st December 1892 for letters to the United Kingdom. A very early example of censorship and of this seal in particular.
