1899 25th August, printed 'Hands across The sea' and 'A Greeting from the Old Country' envelope, bearing QV ½d dull green and 1d carmine pair (SG 97a, 99a), cancelled DURBAN, addressed to the USA. Arrival backstamp (AUG 3). Minor edge faults, most attractive and scarce.
Note: the ½d has been REPLACED being cancelled by a part MOOI RIVER datestamp. The 2½d rate is correct for the period, so one can only assume that the original ½d became detached/defective at some point |
