1904 (12th November), picture postcard with colour view titled ‘Moonlit Waters – Durban Bay’. Bearing a single KEVII 1d tied by a DURBAN (NO 12) single circle datestamp. Addressed to ‘Riga / Russia’ (now Latvia) and with an arrival datestamp of 23rd November. Scarce destination.
Note: this card is an example of a postal item appearing to show ‘impossible dates’, sometimes appearing to arrive before they were sent. The date of posting was 12th November (Gregorian calendar). It would have travelled to Cape Town and then carried on the ‘Norman’ which left on the 16th November, stopping at Madeira on the 29th November and arriving at Southampton on the 3rd December. Adding 13 days to adjust for the Julian calendar in use in Russia at that time, gives an arrival of the 6th December by the Gregorian calendar.
