POSTAL HISTORY
AC1004
Postal History 1902 (5th November), postcard with black and white view on portion of reverse titled ‘South African Weeds --- Arum Lilies.’ Addressed to Argentina, bearing a single Hope Standing 1d (SG 59a) tied by Cape Town (NO 5) double circle datestamp. The card was apparently charged as a letter and received an octagonal ‘T/15c’ tax marking. With BUENOS AIRES / T and CLASIFICACION / SECCION CARGO (23 Dec) large circular datestamps struck on arrival. An unusual destination.

Note: although both the Cape and Argentine Republic were members of the UPU at this date, the 1d postcard rate to fellow UPU members was restricted to post office postcards until 1st January 1903, after which private postcards could be sent at the 1d rate (see Southern African Mails, p172, by Brian Trotter).
