1918 (26th April), WWI - The Kenilworth Castle Incident. KGV ½d postal stationery card addressed to Switzerland, uprated with the addition of a King’s Head ½d green (SG 3) and tied by a PRETORIA (APR 26) machine roller cancellation. The card was carried on the S.S. Kenilworth Castle which sailed to England via Sierra Leone, leaving Cape Town on the 2nd May. While sailing in convoy in the English Channel, the ship was involved in a collision with one of the escorting destroyers, setting off two depth charges which severely damaged the ship and resulted in many casualties. With a PASSED CENSOR circular cachet struck in violet and a ‘NAUFRAGE’ (shipwreck) cachet struck in black. Condition commensurate with salvaged mail. A scarce card from this tragic incident.
