POSTAL HISTORY
AC1005
Postal History 1908 (12th October), printed postcard (‘Grand Hotel, Grahamstown.’) addressed to England. Bearing a KEVII 1d carmine cut into quarters and tied by a GRAHAMSTOWN (OC 12) double circle datestamp. Despite the stamp portions apparently being accepted as payment in Grahamstown, at some point the card was considered unpaid and taxed 2d, being double the deficiency. With a large ‘T’ in blue manuscript and both an octagonal ‘T/20,c’ and a ‘2d’ handstruck tax marking. With South Shields (OC 31) arrival and a further strike the following day when the card was redirected to London. It is unknown if the recipient having to pay 2d found the card as hilarious as the obviously very merry group sending it. Unusual.
