Postal History 1876 (7th June), envelope addressed to England bearing a single 4d blue (SG 24a) tied by a ‘2’ BONC with light proving PORT ELIZABETH (7 Jun) single circle datestamp alongside. Endorsed ‘Per S.S. “Edinburgh Castle.”’ at top and ‘Paid’ at lower left. London (3 July) arrival struck in red on the front. Also showing a ‘2’ accountancy mark in red manuscript. Flap with tears and showing oval seal ‘J.O. SMITH & Co / ALGOA BAY embossed in plain relief (damaged). Otherwise a fine example of a ship letter carried by the Donald Currie line at the 4d per half ounce rate.
