AR530
1900 (20th April), official pre-printed entire, folded and mailed to Cape Town. Bearing a VICTORIA (AP 20) single circle datestamp with blank base (believed to have been issued primarily as a telegraph canceller). The address portion reads ‘On Her Majesty’s Service. / The Military Secretary, / S. Africa, / Government House, / Cape Town.’ The contents concern a Sergeant-Major in the British South Africa Police and reads ‘I hereby acknowledge to have received a Medal granted by the British South Africa Company for Service in Rhodesia, 1896.’ and with signature of ‘HWHearn’. The address of the sender is given as ‘Civil Commissioner’s Office, Victoria, Rhodesia’ and dated ‘20th April 1900’. With Cape Town (6 May) arrival backstamp. A fascinating historical document and a fine example of official free mail out of Rhodesia bearing a scarce datestamp.
