BECHUANALAND / Stellaland / Warren Expedition 1885 (10th May) soldier’s concessionary rate envelope from a Corporal Langton. Addressed to England, bearing a single Cape 1d rose-red (SG 41) tied by a BARKLY WEST / T. O. (MY 10) single circle datestamp with a second strike alongside. Endorsed at top ‘On Active Service’ and countersigned at lower left by the “Officer Commdg B. Troop 2M.R.” (2nd Mounted Rifles). Cape Town (MY 13) transit and London (JU 3) arrival backstamps. Light vertical fold and a few peripheral faults, otherwise a very fine and rare example of mail from this expedition. Ex Gerald Sattin (Spink, June 2008).

Note: this envelope is not recorded in Alan Drysdall’s census of Warren Expedition mail in his article ‘A Postal History of Stellaland’ (London Philatelist 101.65, March 1992).
