BECHUANALAND / RHODESIA BSAC / Matabele Rebellion 1896 (17th June), unstamped Officer's envelope addressed to England. Endorsed at top ‘No Stamps Obtainable’ and showing a very fine TATI / MATABELELAND (17 JU) single circle datestamp. With octagonal-framed ‘T/60c’ and a ‘6d/B.16’ marking handstruck in London. The reverse with London (JY 27) arrival backstamp. The reverse with closed tear and a few light peripheral faults, otherwise a very fine and rare example of mail from this campaign, routed through Tati in Bechuanaland where it received the first postal cancellation.

Note: although Tati was incorporated into the Bechuanaland Protectorate in 1892 (Barry), from April 1894 until 1897 the Tati agency was under the control of the BSAC, after which it was transferred to Francistown (the new railway having bypassed Tati). Although not situated in Matabeleland, the BSAC used the ‘Matabeleland’ territorial designation on the Tati datestamp during their administration and BSAC stamp were used there.
