POSTAL HISTORY
AB3297
BECHUANALAND / RHODESIA BSAC / Matabele Rebellion 1896 (13th May), unstamped Officer's envelope addressed to England, endorsed at top ‘On Service’, and at lower left ‘C. Halsted Comdg B.F.F. The Neck / Mangwe’. Showing a PALLA (MY 9) single circle datestamp partly overstruck with a large ‘6d’ handstruck in London. The reverse with Mafeking Bechuanaland (MY 13) transit and Twickenham (JU 8) arrival backstamps. A few light mainly peripheral faults, otherwise a very fine and rare example of mail from this campaign which was routed through Palla in Bechuanaland where it received the first postal cancellation. Ex John Michael (Stanley Gibbons Auctions, 1976)

Note: Captain Halsted commanded a detachment of the Bulawayo Field Force. ‘Fort Halsted’ constructed in April 1896 between Mangwe and Figtree was named after him.
