BECHUANALAND / RHODESIA BSAC / Matabele Rebellion 1896 (27th July), unstamped Officer's envelope addressed to England, endorsed at top ‘On Active Service’ ‘Free’ and at lower left ‘GAH Carew Capt / 7th Hussars’. Showing a MACLOUTSIE (JY 27) single circle datestamp, an octagonal-framed ‘T/10c’ and a ‘1d/F.B.’ handstruck in London. The reverse with a light Mafeking transit and Watford (AU 29) arrival backstamps. The flap with the crest of the 7th Hussars printed in black. Closed flap tear, otherwise a very fine and rare example of mail from this campaign which was routed through Macloutsie in Bechuanaland where it received the first postal cancellation.
